In Istanbul you can help feed stray animals with plastic bottles

I recently read a book that talked about the concept of “emotionally intelligent signage” achat viagra soft. Basically, rather than just have a sign that says “line starts here”, the sign could say “don’t worry, this line moves really fast”. Or another example, rather than “please pick up after your dog”, the sign could say “children play here, please pick up after your dog”. Adding just that extra little bit can make a huge difference to people’s psychology and willingness to participate.

I’ve also heard of studies that say that the best way to get people to conserve energy is not to tell them to do it simply because it’s good for the environment (a fact we all know), but rather to tell them that their neighbours are already doing it and saving money. The social aspect of relating it to their neighbours, and appealing to their desire to save money (rather than just save the environment for the sake of it, not all people are motivated by this), got much better results.

Here I think is another example of this, socially intelligent activism. In Instanbul, they have machines where if you recycle a plastic bottle, the machine will release food for a stray dog. While it would still be preferable to move away from plastic bottles entirely, this is one of the best uses I’ve seen of them. But a lot of people can empathize with animals and rather than throwing their bottles away, they can easily see how a small effort of recycling helps.

Istanbul’s 150,000 stray dogs and cats recently got their own vending machines in the Turkish city, and they machines aren’t just encouraging the feeding of homeless animals — they’re also cleaning up the streets. The Smart Recycling Box, invented by Turkish company Pugedon, dispenses food for strays in exchange for recycled plastic bottles.
Here’s how it works: When someone deposits an empty plastic bottle into the machine, food is released in a dish at the bottom. There’s even a water dish attached so users can pour out any remaining water before recycling it.
Turkish officials allowed Pugedon to install the machines under the agreement that the government wouldn’t have to fund them. Instead, the recycled bottles cover the cost of pet food. The Smart Recycling Boxes will provide a steady source of food for animals that often rely on compassionate residents to feed them.
Istanbul’s strays have been a source of contention in recent years. Some residents enjoy the presence of animals so well-adapted to city life that they stop at traffic lights, but others have asked the government to step in.
These complaints led the Turkish government to draft a law that would transport thousands of animals to a “natural habitat parks” far outside the city, which was met with a backlash from animal-loving residents.
I would love to see this get implemented everywhere.

A small change can make a big difference

Well worth 2 minutes of your time and worth keeping in mind:

20 Photos of Beautiful Human Compassion

It is my firm belief that to be cynical in this world is a choice. Sure, there’s lots of crappy stuff happening out there, but there’s also a lot of good stuff, if you look for it. That is why anytime I see this kind of thing, you better believe I’m going to share it.

These 20 Photos Are Going To Make You Cry. But You’ll See Why It’s Totally Worth It.

So go, have a look, smile big, let your heart warm and enjoy the rest of your night 🙂

Helping instead of Arresting

Whenever I see these, I will post them. There’s a lot of unpleasant things happening in the world and it is always good to have a reminder that good things happen too! Bravo Officer!

On the right: Miami Dade County Police Officer Vicki Thomas, who is a wonderful human being.

The woman on the left is a mother from Miami who was so desperate to feed her hungry family that she was trying to steal a lot of food. The woman on the right is Miami-Dade County Police Officer Vicki Thomas. Officer Thomas was about to arrest Jessica Robles but changed her mind at the last minute. Instead of arresting her, she bought Robles $100 worth of groceries: “I made the decision to buy her some groceries because arresting her wasn’t going to solve the problem with her children being hungry.” And there’s no denying they were hungry. Robles’ 12 year old daughter started crying when she told local TV station WSVN about how dire their situation was: “[It’s] not fun to see my brother in the dirt hungry, asking for food, and we have to tell him, ‘There is nothing here.’” Officer Thomas says she has no question that what she did was right: “To see them go through the bags when we brought them in, it was like Christmas. That $100 to me was worth it.” But Officer Thomas did have one request: “The only thing I asked of her is, when she gets on her feet, that she help someone else out. And she said she would.” And guess what? The story gets even better. After word got out about what happened people donated another $700 for Jessica Robles to spend at the grocery store. And then best of all a local business owner invited her in for an interview and ended up hiring her on the spot as a customer service rep. She started crying when he told her: “There’s no words how grateful I am that you took your time and helped somebody out. Especially somebody like me.” And to think it all started with one veteran police officer trusting her “instinct” instead of going “by the book”. Courtesy WSVN

Making the most of a bad situation

I saw a post in my facebook feed this morning, about a really cool, positive outcome to an unfortunate situation.

As we know, happy couples don’t always stay happy, not every relationship lasts, and in this particular case – a wedding was called off, but after all preparations had already been made.

So what was the positive outcome? Well, as it turns out the family in question decided rather than waste it all, why not donate it to the less fortunate?

I love to see stuff like this. Sure there are people out there who take advantage, who take more than they give, who don’t leave the world a nicer place than they found it. But I like to think (hope!) there are more people out there who would give you the shirt off their back if you needed it more. Major kudos to them!
