Most common language spoken by state after English and Spanish

A lot of people learn English as a second language so they can come to America to take their shot at the so called “American Dream”. 老虎证券 America was settled by Europeans, but more recently a lot of immigrants have also come from south of the border – from Spanish speaking countries.

Thanks to , we have 2 visualizations – a visualization of the most common language (besides English) by state, and one for the most common language after both English and Spanish.

Spoiler alert – German is the next most common language spoken in the USA. Considering English has most of its roots in German, this probably shouldn’t be very surprising. French and Italian are pretty common as well.

I always find these sorts of maps interesting, so I like to share. Have a look and see what state you might do best in if your native tongue isn’t English or Spanish.

What’s the difference – Vigor vs Rigor

It’s been a while since I last did one of these comparison/clarification posts, but I found another example of two words that I didn’t clearly know the difference between.

I had thought vigor and rigor were basically the same thing. Upon looking them up, I had the correct understanding of rigor, but was a little off on rigor.

According to Merriam Webster:

Rigor – a (1) :  harsh inflexibility in opinion, temper, or judgment.

Examples:
They underwent the rigors of military training.
They conducted the experiments with scientific rigor.
A scholar known for their intellectual rigor

And that last one might be part of why I had them somewhat confused.

Vigor, on the other hand:

1:  possessing vigor :  full of physical or mental strength or active force
2:  done with vigor :  carried out forcefully and energetically
So, it seems they are kind of related. You can do things rigorously, and with vigor.
I clearly have a very vigorous brain to run a site like this, don’t you think?

Untranslateable words give us a unique window into other cultures

This one comes courtesy of 9gag.com, “Untranslatable Words, shows a lot about different cultures”.

The post features illustrated representations of the words, their meaning and their origin language, but I’ll transcribe them here (please do go look at the pretty pictures though also!). Apologies for the lack of accents on some of the letters, i’m not sure if that will break the formatting here.

1. Waldeinsamkeit (German) – The feeling of being alone in the woods
2. Cualacino (Italian) – The mark left on the table by a cold glass
3. Iktsuarpok (Inuit) – The feeling of anticipation that leads you to keep looking outside to see if anyone is coming
4. Komorebi (Japenese) – Sunlight that filters through the leaves of trees
5. Pochemuchka (Russian) – A person who asks a lot of questions
6. Sobremesa (Spanish) – The time spent after lunch or dinner, talking to the people you shared the meal with
7. Jayus (Indonesian) – A joke told so poorly and so unfunny that one cannot help but laugh [yeah, I’ve been guilty of this before too]
8. Pana Po’o (Hawaiin) – The act of scratching your head in order to help you remember something you have forgotten
9. Depaysement (French) – The feeling that comes from not being in one’s home country
10. Goya (Urdu) – The transporting suspension of disbelief that can occur i.e. in good storytelling
11. Mangata (Swedish) – The roadlike reflection of the moon on the water

Oddly enough as I think about this, I realize that when we know a select few words of another language, we are pretty much instantly able to hone in and notice when those words get said in the middle of an otherwise gibberish (to us) sentence. I know that even though I haven’t been able to keep up my Spanish studies for over a year now, I still catch lots of words in Spanish when I hear them, even if I don’t remember what they mean, I recognize the sounds of them.

Sidenote #2 – speaking of #6 above, sobre means on top of (if I recall right) and la mesa means table, so that word makes sense, even though I never came across it in my studies, it basically means “on top of the table” or “over the table”, so the only word missing is hablar (to talk).

Also, clearly I am a pochemuchka.

For the language nerds

From the website “Etymologikon”, comes “Lexical Distance Among the Languages of Europe”:

lexicaldistanceielangs“This chart shows the lexical distance — that is, the degree of overall vocabulary divergence — among the major languages of Europe.

The size of each circle represents the number of speakers for that language. Circles of the same color belong to the same language group. All the groups except for Finno-Ugric (in yellow) are in turn members of the Indo-European language family.

English is a member of the Germanic group (blue) within the Indo-European family. But thanks to 1066, William of Normandy, and all that, about 75% of the modern English vocabulary comes from French and Latin (ie the Romance languages, in orange) rather than Germanic sources. As a result, English (a Germanic language) and French (a Romance language) are actually closer to each other in lexical terms than Romanian (a Romance language) and French.

So why is English still considered a Germanic language? Two reasons. First, the most frequently used 80% of English words come from Germanic sources, not Latinate sources. Those famous Anglo-Saxon monosyllables live on! Second, the syntax of English, although much simplified from its Old English origins, remains recognizably Germanic. The Norman conquest added French vocabulary to the language, and through pidginization it arguably stripped out some Germanic grammar, but it did not ADD French grammar.

The original research data for the chart comes from K. Tyshchenko (1999), Metatheory of Linguistics. (Published in Russian.)”
——————————————————-

That’s pretty interesting, especially the explanation about why English is still considered Germanic, whereas it does seem to share a lot more in common with French and Spanish now.

PolyGlot – Another way to help you learn a new language

Despite using this tool as part of my learning regimen when I was learning Spanish last year, I somehow forgot to include it in my web resources roundup of free learning aides.

PolyGlot is a free (Google Chrome only) browser extension which randomly replaces the words on the web page you are viewing with the same word in the language you are trying to learn. You can set the frequency and other parameters (such as the minimum or maximum length of the word the extension will translate). It works for many different languages as well. And you can turn it off and on anytime.

I also noticed that it seems to only work on text based websites, so for instance, if you’re reading emails in Gmail, it won’t convert anything in that window (Gmail seems to be kind of a self-contained program within the browser, not a text HTML web page). But you can use it on reddit, on wikipedia, on metafilter, anything that is mostly text based.

So, go check it out, it’ll help you learn just that little bit faster if you get the settings right for your learning level. I’ve also added this to the Resources page with all the other language resources.

Sadly I have not had time to formally study or practice any other languages in almost a year, but I do hope to get back into Spanish eventually. It is a really fun and beautiful language!

Cognitive Seance – How should gender shape language?

So, if you’ve been wondering why the lack of posts this week (moreso than usual), it is because I attended “social events” 4 of the 5 nights this week. And basically, if I don’t come straight home from work, I don’t have a chance to write. I often have to wait until the weekend and dump my brains out then.

Tonight I went to Cognitive Séance 86: How Should Gender Shape Language?

I can’t possibly hope to recap everything that was said over the course of the 3 hour discussion, so I’m just going to try and boil it down to my takeaway on the issue. I heard an analogy a few years ago that “reading parenting books doesn’t necessarily make you a better parent, but being the kind of person who chooses to read parenting books at all, believing they might gain something from them, would tend to suggest you probably will be a more attentive and involved parent”.

I feel something similar can be said about gender in language. Being aware of the language you are using and how it might come across differently in how you phrase something vs what you actually mean by it, can mean that you can use a language more effectively and not unfairly or improperly apply a gender bias. We could work to make a language less arguably “sexist”, but there is also onus on the user of the language to use it appropriately. This can also apply to race, as well as other things.

So, try to be aware of what you are saying and how you’re saying it. Listen to how others talk. Emulate the good, curb the not so good.

Stay tuned for more. I have quite a backlog of stuff to write about!
